Day 1: Orientation, MAGNOLIA and Standards.Oh My!



I'm back, baby!

And it feels so good.

So today was like a reunion.  Seeing people i've not seen in a while. Reuniting with colleagues and meeting new colleagues.

We were oriented for most of the morning.  Toured our facilities, got our parking permits.  It was the first time i'd been in the old laundry building since it was renovated.  It has changed so much since the early 2000s when I was a regular fixture.

Anyway, after lunch we went over to the library to get acquainted with MAGNOLIA.

I'm pretty sure i'll be able to utilize it effectively.  Especially now that I hyperlinked it to the page that I can revisit! I learned THAT lesson from last time, I tell you what.

Then we learned about standards.  I was not aware of this little jewel that can help out with standards as far as technology integration is concerned.

It rained, so the walking tour of campus was out of the question.  I did drive around a bit during lunch.  So much is the same, but so much is not.

In the end, i'm still here.

Now I have been assured that what's coming next (between now and 5 o'clock is awesome.  We shall see.

Guess what? We're back! Short session this time.  Only 5 days as opposed to a month.  So everything is feeling pretty rapid-fire. New art project: It is an explanation of the Watergate Scandal. Today we were treated to a session on using music in the classroom by he Funchess' of Yazoo County. It was very informative and entertaining. After our art project, we were treated to a session from Reginald Ware of Alabama. This one dealt with classroom management and was extremely informative and entertaining as well.  I will definitely be using the social contract in my class this year, especially since I am starting at a new school.

Day 4

We began with a session on college and career readiness skills.  Got access to an ACT prep site. Following that was a session on teaching "Generation Z" and implementing digital content.  Thinking about using Quizziz instead of Kahoot moving forward. Art project progress: I figured the "smoking gun" needed some smoke to go with it. We finished up with a session on vocabulary instruction.  Had a lot of good content and ideas in it.  Mainly this:

Day 8: Understanding by Design, Conversations on the other side of the world.

1.  Simply by sharing that what we do has to have a purpose or there's no point in doing it.  I would explain that once they figure out what they wanted the students to learn, why they needed to learn it and how this fits into the big picture, planning everything else becomes so much easier. 2.  I plan to shift to more "backwards planning."  I was doing it before but really got away from it in the last few years.  I also plan to have a Skype or google hangouts session.   So the morning was spent learning about effective lesson planning. I feel much more confident that I can do better at this.  My problem is taking time to plan as opposed to using my down time as down time.   We also spent about an hour on a Skype session with a teacher in Hyderabad, India.  It was interesting to learn about how schools are different over there.  40 kids to a class?!?
