Fall Follow-Up Session

So the morning was spent catching up and discussing grant writing.  It is not as complicated as I was led to believe. I do have some questions, but I am so muddle-headed today that I think i'd better wait until I have some time to process.

The afternoon was spent learning about coding.  Also not as complicated as I was led to believe. 
There are multiple applications across the disciplines that can be implemented into instruction. 

Beware of memes. Anyone can code.

Day 5: Weebly, BYOD/1:1, and Graphic Design

Today we explored our websites at weebly. Here's what I have so far: tonyodom.weebly.com A couple of the headings I made myself.  I couldn't find what I liked, so I made it. We also had a discussion regrding BYOD.  I spoke my piece and was wildly unsuccessful.  ADD was firing today.  We did explore possible solutions to problems. There was a guest speaker after lunch. Nashandra James, technology coordinator from the Madison School District spoke to us about the successes and struggles of their 1:1 initiative.  She gave us some great input about what we can do in our districts. We wrapped up the day getting a primer in graphic design from Dr Beriswell.

Day 16: Review, A Website of my life, a Super Nova and all the news that's fit to print.

We began with a presentation about iPad apps that can be of use in the classroom. Then we made out own website story using Adobe Spark: https://spark.adobe.com/page/kj2yyqTGGi3R5/ So over the weekend, my clay pieces were fired.  One came out fine: And it's being glazed: The glaze looks like Pepto-Bismol. My tiles were not so fortunate. This is the sole survivor.  Much like an old star, they exploded.  The brightest flames burn quickest, I suppose.  I still have the concept and I also have the sole survivor: Hopefully, it holds up because this glaze has a very interesting look once it's fired. Day 4: Road Trip to the Coal Mine, NOT going down, down, down.

Today we took an excursion to the Coal Mine. I It was very interesting to see how the process takes place.  Lignite is what is mined there.  All this time, I thought it was an underground process, but it is not.  It is more like strip mining.    However, they go to great lengths to replace what they take out.  Here is a picture of mined land that has been restored.  Here can be seen the oldest land (which has been reclaimed) to the newest (in the distance on the horizon). It was a spectacular view. Just to give you an idea of how massive some of this equipment was: I stand about 5'11" and the middle of this truck wheel comes up almost to the top of my head. We also learned about how the lignite was formed over millions of years by the compaction of prehistoric swamp land.  They have even found petrified wood within the lignite. I learned a lot about mining.  We even did an experiment on porosity ...
